Riverlands School Learning Vision

At Riverlands we believe:

  • Children should acquire excellence in Literacy and Numeracy skills at or above their chronological age.

  • Children should be exposed to a wide variety of activities and be encouraged to have a go and to develop the confidence to succeed.

  • Our school has a family friendly atmosphere.

  • As parents and caregivers you are a valuable part of School. We welcome your involvement in our school and look forward to developing a strong partnership with you, where we all work together to make your child’s schooling a positive experience. Helping support your child's learning by building a good relationship with your child's teacher, finding out how your child is going and working together to support their learning is important at School.

The School has a supportive Board of Trustees, an active Parent Support Group (Friends Of The School, FOTS), enthusiastic and capable staff and we look forward to working with you in our unique environment.

Positive Behaviour 4 Learning (PB4L)

Riverlands School is proud to be a PB4L School.

PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour For Learning. It is an evidence-based framework developed for use in New Zealand schools, and supported by the Ministry of Education.
Our Riverlands values of Respect, Relationships, Resilience and Responsibility, underpin all PB4L teaching and learning.

PB4L takes the approach that opportunities for learning and achievement increase if:

  • the school environment is positive and supportive

  • expectations are consistently clear

  • students are consistently taught expected behaviours

  • expected behaviours are consistently acknowledged

  • inappropriate behaviours are consistently responded to in a fair and equitable way

At the heart of PB4L is the principle that acknowledging and encouraging positive behaviour is more effective than punishing negative behaviour.

Riverlands School began actively developing its PB4L school-wide program at the start of 2022.

Our School

Riverlands School was established 1906 and is a semi rural school based on the outskirts of Blenheim.  Catering for the educational needs for students in years 1-8. We have a strong emphasis on family involvement and the outdoor programme is enjoyed across the school and includes a focus on local resources and community participation.

Our roll is currently around 235 children and running throughout 10 classrooms.

Our Community

Our school is located on the southern outskirts of Blenheim. Because of our rural outlook and
location we define ourselves as a ‘semi-rural, full primary school’. We have some families living
on farms or lifestyle blocks with the majority of our whanau living in urban Blenheim. We pride
ourselves on having solid and reliable support from our school whanau and local businesses.
Our families support their children's learning and education, and they also work hard to provide for their families. We value our interaction with our local community and look for ways to enhance student learning by having learning experiences outside of the classroom.
Riverlands School is also fortunate to be supported by wider community services and trusts who
invest in supporting schools and student learning experiences. We have a very close
relationship with the Graeme Dingle Foundation who provide the weekly KiwiCan programme to our students. We also annually arrange a fortnight where the Life Education Mobile Classroom comes to school to support our health program. Our school also utilises the services of the Creative Kids Trust to offer weekly music and art therapy sessions. We work with Stadium 2000 for swimming and fundamental skill training and local service clubs to support student and whanau welfare and environmental projects.
Riverlands School is also a member school of our local Kahui Ako (Community of Learning),
Piritahi Kahui Ako. With 22 member schools covering pre-school to secondary school aged
students. We work closely and collaboratively with all our local schools and teaching staff to
improve student achievement and progress.
